A two-time Olympian highlighted the importance of women in sport to local high school soccer players Thursday at the University of Winnipeg.

Kaillie Humphries won a gold medal for bobsledding in the 2010 and 2014 winter Olympics.

She spoke to a group of girls who are about to compete in the provincial soccer championships.

Humphries shared her own experiences and stressed the need to put more women athletes in the spotlight.

“Sports teaches … so many different skills to really give the girls the tools to be able to excel,” she said. “And so overall, we understand that girls do sport for many different reasons than guys do it."

The discussion was part of "fueling women champions," a program that encourages more girls and women to be active in sports.

The initiative says ninety-nine per cent of sponsorships go to male athletes and only nineteen per cent of Canadian women participate in sport.
