The families of police officers killed and injured on duty came together in a ceremony at the Legislative Building on Sunday.

Leiutenant Governor Janice Fillmon spoke at the gathering, one of many across Canada held to remember the sacrifices officers make in their jobs.

The Winnipeg ceremony brought together multiple generations of families, Deputy Chief Gord Perrier said.

“We are very honoured to be able to bring these people together and remember them and never forget their sacrifice for their community, and really make a connection with today’s officers and the work that they do,” he said.

The first police officer killed in Winnipeg was Const. John Beattie. He was accidentally electrocuted at the scene of a fire in the Main and Water area in the Exchange District in 1911. He had only been on the job for 27 days.
