Manitoba RCMP are investigating a death on Roseau River First Nation in southern Manitoba.

CTV News has learned the deceased is a 14-year-old boy named Hyde Hayden.

RCMP are assisting the Dakota Ojibway Police Service in the investigation.

Hayden’s friends and family say the boy loved to play hockey and appeared in his final game just hours before his death.

“Everybody is upset right now,” said his uncle, Sheldon Smith. “Just trying to get by today.”

Smith said Hayden was the eldest child in his family, who are devastated by the loss.

Police have released few details about the teen’s death, but community members tell CTV News the boy was beaten and was later discovered outside in the cold.

“It’s a tough thing to deal with, especially with someone so young,” said Chief Ken Henry of the Roseau River First Nation.

“Of course you can feel the tension here. It’s more of a sadness going through the community right now.”
