It’s that time of year again to slow down around elementary schools or risk a hefty ticket.

On Tuesday, Sept. 1, the 30 km/h speed limit is back in effect in Winnipeg for the school year, even though many students don’t go back to school until next week.

To clear up confusion and make it safer, Winnipeg School Division Board Chair MarkWasyliw says the reduced limits should be in place year-round, including on weekends.

Wasyliw said many families use school playgrounds outside of regular hours.

"So, I think it would be simpler and fairer to everyone and safer to have one law that applies all year round,” said Wasyliw.

Calgary recently extended its reduced speed zones year-round and into the evening and weekends.
