A 95-year old veteran of the Second World War received a special honour Sunday.

The honoury French consul from Manitoba presented Emil Gillies with the Legion of Honour medal from France.

The medal recognizes his partition in helping liberate the country.

The ceremony included Gillies' family at the Duke of Kent Legion in the Exchange District.

"On behalf of Emil, he was very honoured to receive it and was completely surprised when he received it," said John Edwards of the Duke of Kent Legion.

The medal is the highest honour awarded by France to either civilians or members of the military.
