Following his fourth place finish in the race to be Winnipeg's next mayor, Gord Steeves announced he is retiring from politics.

“I want to congratulate Brian and wish him all the best in his mayoralty,” said Steeves, who was first elected as a school trustee in 1995.

In 2001, voters sent him to city hall as the councillor for St Vital, a position he held for more than a decade before stepping down to make an unsuccessful run at provincial politics.

"It's been almost 20 years of me campaigning, going door to door,” said Steeves. “When I walked up that last driveway today and dropped off that last pamphlet, I sort of thought, you know this might be the last time."

With his wife and children at his side, Steeves made it official in a speech to his supporters.
