Stony Mountain Institution was locked down Monday after a brawl inside that involved multiple prisoners.

RCMP said they were called to the prison just before 2 p.m. when they were told multiple inmates had been injured.

According to the RCMP several inmates were taken to hospital.

Police were not initially able to say if any staff members were injured during the melee.

RCMP said part of the investigation will include whether the brawl involved gang members and if it was planned in advance.

Sources inside the institution told CTV News that the violence was between inmates. Sources say no guards were hurt, but six inmates were taken to hospital.

A representative from Stony Mountain Institution says the prison is still on lockdown, and will remain that way for a couple days while the investigation continues.
