A Brandon shooting suspect tried to hide from police inside a church on Saturday. Now, a 24-year-old man faces a charge of attempted murder.

Police got a call around 5:40 p.m. about a fight on the street between two men. One of the men had a hand gun and shots were heard.

When officers got there, however, they couldn’t find anybody involved.

About 20 minutes later, a male victim was admitted to the Brandon Regional Health Centre with a gunshot wound to the chest. The victim was alert and provided police with a description of the shooter.

At 6:22 p.m., police got a report that a male had gone into a church and allegedly told a staff member he was hiding from police because he shot someone.

Police went to the church and arrested the suspect without incident. Police determined the suspect was on a recognizance for previous drug charges and in breach of several conditions.

The victim didn’t require surgery for the single gunshot wound to his left side. Doctors removed a small calibre bullet and released him.

Police recovered a .22 calibre revolver from a garbage bin in a back lane on the 300 block of 9th Street and 10th Street.

In addition to the attempted murder charge, the suspect is also charged with possessing a restricted weapon, discharging a firearm, and breach of recognizance.
