When dark and stormy clouds roll through the sky, many people rush for their cameras to take photos and video, but safety and tornado experts say it may not be the best move to keep you safe.

Environment Canada confirms a weak tornado touched down one kilometre from La Salle on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Christina Sawisky lives in La Salle and watched the funnel clouds that became a tornado. She took photos and said it was mesmerizing to watch.

She said she felt very safe because there was no wind and the clouds were moving away from them, not towards them.

Environment Canada warning preparedness meteorologist Natalie Hasell said it's better to stay safe and seek shelter.

"I appreciate people who take photos. It helps us confirm things. I would honestly prefer you be safe,” said Hasell.

The government advises people at home move to the basement and away from windows.

If you're driving, get out of the vehicle and seek shelter.

As a last resort, find a low-lying area, like a ditch, and get as low as possible.
