Winnipeggers woke up to a thick layer of snow, slippery driving conditions and the realization that winter had arrived.

However, the silver lining to the wintery conditions may be how long Winnipeg went without any snow at all.

According to Environment Canada’s records, the last time the city had a dusting of the white stuff was April 10 of 2016.

That means it’s been 226 days since the last snowfall.

It also means this is the latest winter arrival date on record.

Environment Canada has been collecting weather data since 1872, and according to its records Nov. 22 is the latest date for a first snow fall in Winnipeg in all those 144 years.

First snowfall affects commute:
As it seems to happen every year on the first snowfall, the morning commute was a headache.

Many drivers reported fender benders and traffic delays all over the city.

Winnipeg police said five motor vehicle collisions were reported to them during the morning hours, but police weren’t required for four of those.

Police added one of the collisions involved a pedestrian who was taken to hospital in stable condition.

Winter weather look ahead:
Although winter is here, the snow that fell Tuesday might not stick around.

CTV Weather Specialist Colleen Bready said daytime high temperatures are well above the seasonal normal for this time of year, which is -4 C.

As of Tuesday morning, she said the forecast for the upcoming weekend is beautiful, and if it holds, the snow could be melted by then.

Bready added that daytime highs for the rest of the week are above freezing leading up to Saturday.
