Emergency crews responded to a building fire in Fort Richmond Friday morning.

Winnipeg police say they received a call of a building fire in the 100 block of Ulster Street near Greencrest Avenue around 9:30 a.m. Friday.

Firefighters said when they arrived the structure was well-involved in flames and smoke could be seen coming out of the roof of the building.

Firefighters said they quickly did a primary search of the building to see if there were any residents still inside. No one was found and it became a defensive battle trying to stop the flames from spreading to other nearby apartments.

One man who was inside the building at the time of the fire said he awoke to water dripping down on his bed. He realized the building was on fire, and got all six people inside his first-floor suite out of the building.

The man had just moved into the apartment about a week before, and had not yet submitted his renters insurance papers. He's worried that much of the things that he had inside could now be gone forever.

However, there may be some good news for tenants in the outer suites. The Fire Chief says that while there is likely water damage, some of the contents may be salvageable.
