Winnipeg police went door-to-door canvassing a West End neighbourhood Wednesday looking for information related to the Tina Fontaine murder investigation.

"They were just asking me if I (saw) her around, (saw) her around the mall, if I've overheard anybody asking or talking about it, or anything like that,” said resident Gordon Rafuse after police knocked on his door.

According to Const. Jason Michalyshen of the Winnipeg Police Service, detectives targeted the area around Langside and Furby streets because they know Fontaine spent time there and it was one of the last places people reported seeing her alive.

"If there's anything I can express right now, the information that we have received so far from the public has been very beneficial to the investigation,” said Michalyshen.

A teenage girl living in the neighbourhood told CTV News she often feels unsafe in the area but having the investigation into Fontaine’s murder happening so close to home causes her even more alarm.

“It’s scary because it could happen again. You have to be careful who you’re with and what time you’re walking around,” said 17-year-old Cecilia Arias.

Winnipeg police said they have so far not linked Fontaine’s murder to any other crimes.

They said they will look into all tips from the public and encourage anyone with information to call in.

Anyone with information can contact investigators at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477.
