In the past, if you had an idea for a new product, you had to get a company to invest in it. These days, that isn't always necessary.

Using a process called crowdfunding, many people are raising venture capital from regular people over the Internet.

Winnipeg rapper Fresh I.E. turned to crowdfunding to raise cash for his upcoming album.

"Just really to help the mastering, the marketing and manufacturing," he said.

He's far from alone.

According to Kickstarter, tens of thousands of projects have received billions of dollars from millions of people.

"If you're just honest with people, they will fork out the cash,” said Susie Erjavec Parker from Sparker Strategy Group.

But how do you know where all the money is going to go?

There are some out-of-this world projects after your money.

Susie Parker advises you look for details in their plan.

"Do some research. Google the company name. See if you can find out financial information,” said Parker.

If you can't, Parker said you might want to find another campaign to support and help make someone else's dream come true.
