Many people in southwest Manitoba may spend their Easter weekend digging out after a snow storm moving across the Prairies could dump as much as 15 centimeters of snow.

Environment Canada issued snow and rain warning for many areas of southwest Manitoba north of the Trans-Canada Highway and in the Interlake. A Special Weather Statement said the storm making its way across the province could bring between 10 to 15 centimetres by Saturday morning.

Much of the snow could turn to rain as it reaches the eastern part of the province, where temperatures are warmer.

No snow is forecast for Winnipeg, but five to 10 millimetres of rain could fall by Friday evening.

The precipitation will force provincial flood forecasters to adjust their flood outlook. They will issue an updated forecast once they assess the extent of the storm.

The Portage Diversion continues to operate in an effort to manage ice on the Assiniboine River that has caused ice jams. A high water advisory is in place for the Assiniboine rover from Griswold to Portage la Prairie.

The Red River is expected to crest in Winnipeg between April 21 and 24.
