A woman was taken to hospital in critical condition after an early morning collision on St. Mary's Road.

The incident occurred around 3:45 a.m. on Friday. Winnipeg police say a driver, travelling southbound on St. Mary’s Road, appears to have lost control and hit a tree.

Police say only one car was involved and a 26-year-old woman was the only person inside the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Officials say she remains in critical, but stable condition.

Southbound St. Mary's near Britannica Street was closed to traffic.

Around 10 a.m. Friday, police said the area was expected to remain closed to southbound traffic for another three hours.

Speed appears to be a contributing factor in the collision.

Police continue to investigate and ask anyone with information about the crash to call 204-986-6271.
