Manitobans united once again Saturday to reaffirm their dedication to missing and murdered women in the province.

“We have to do it altogether as a family,” said Brenda Osborne. Osborne’s daughter Claudette went missing in Winnipeg in 2008.

So, for the fourth year in a row, Manitobans found their way to the No Stone Unturned Awareness Concert at The Forks.

“A lot of people are hurting, and a lot of people have given us strength because we are here,” said Osborne.

Osborne’s journey to the event was perhaps the longest. She walked over 800 kilometres to the event – all the way from Norway House.

Osborne has made the journey every year since her daughter disappeared.

“I can’t even describe it. It’s so hard. Everyday when you get up, the pain is still there,” said Osborne

It’s a feeling Cindy Rubio shares. Rubio’s daughter Roberta McIvor was killed in 2011. This year, Rubio walked with Osborne from Sandy Bay First Nation to Winnipeg.

“I was waiting for her to arrive in Sandy Bay because I told her that I would walk with her to give the support,” Rubio said.

And when they arrived in Winnipeg the pair were greeted by hundreds of family, friends and supporters. The Forks was dotted with hundreds of small cardboard butterflies Saturday afternoon, each with a name and photo of a woman who went missing or was murdered.

The annual event, the pair said, is meant to keep awareness alive.

New developments like the arrest of alleged serial killer Shawn Lamb and the expansion of Project Devote are significant steps towards finding answers, the women said.

“We’re very hopeful,” said Bernadette Smith, Osborne’s sister. “There are 18 officers working on it now, versus four.”

Smith hopes the new eyes on the cases will prompt further developments.

In the meantime Osborne said she will continue her yearly walk to ensure her daughter and others like her are not forgotten.

“Justice has to be there. The leaders have to be in front if us, beside us – to be strong,” said Osborne.

Members of the public are invited to attend a candlelight vigil at 10 p.m. at Oodena Circle in The Forks.
