A long, cold winter continues to create problems for Winnipeggers.

River City Home Inspection said the number of calls related to mould is higher this year. Inspector Jed Cox said the winter caused more condensation in homes, which can lead to the growth of mould.

Cox said the first sign of mould is often a musty smell. He advises homeowners to check around baseboards and windows and in closets, if they think mould is present in their homes.

Cox said homeowners should call a professional to confirm the presence of mould, and let them remove it safely.

Health Canada said that all types and amounts of mould can cause health risks.

It said symptoms include coughing, shortness of breath and allergic reactions.
