A Manitoba man said it was inappropriate for Manitoba Public Insurance to send a court summons through Facebook.

Andrew Mykichuk noticed he had a Facebook message from a strange woman. When he opened it up, he found a court date from MPI.

“Just in poor judgment. I mean I’m not the best person to judge other people, but at the same time, this is a crown corporation,” said Mykichuk.

MPI said it will use Facebook to locate and serve people with outstanding fees. It said using social media is a last resort, and requires permission from the court.

Court documents show that MPI contacted Mykichuk’s family and tried several addresses before messaging him on Facebook. MPI said an investigator created the Facebook profile to make contact. The name is fake and the picture is taken from a public website.

“A profile was created of a female in a bikini and again reaching out to a male on Facebook to get his attention. And it certainly worked,” said Brian Smiley with MPI.

Mykichuk said he doesn’t know why MPI couldn’t find him. He said he’s not planning on replying to the Facebook summons.
