The caretaker of a West End school wound up in hospital Friday evening after a fire.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was called out around 6:50 p.m. to École Sacré-Coeur on Furby Street.

The fire broke out a few hours after the Winnipeg School Division middle school ended classes for winter break.

When fire crews arrived on scene, a caretaker exited the building and indicated there was a fire in the music room.

“They found the music room well involved in fire, they quickly extinguished it, but there's extensive damage," said Platoon Chief Morris Semkowski.

One person was taken to hospital as a precaution.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
