Mayor Brian Bowman is getting congratulations after Winnipeg made the cut as the only Canadian location on National Geographic's list of the world's best trips for 2016.

The magazine notes the Manitoba capital doesn't usually find its way onto bucket lists.

But it calls the city "the little spark on the Prairie" and says it got a big boost when the Canadian Museum for Human Rights opened in 2014 and it was one of the hosts of the FIFA Women's World Cup of Soccer last summer.

It also lauds the city's Exchange District and notes Winnipeggers embrace winter with many festivals -- although it does say the best time to visit is June through September.

The article listed socials as a fun fact about the province, calling the events a "time-honored wedding tradition" for the almost-wed in Winnipeg.
