A convenient device many Manitobans use to start their cars on cold winter days is the subject of a recall notice.

According to Health Canada, almost 900,000 Canadians own one of the remote start systems that are potentially under recall.

The product is manufactured by a company called Directed and sold under the following 15 different brand names:

Astrostart, Autostart, Avital, Clifford, Command Start, Nordic Start, Orbit, Polar Start, Premier Defense, ProStart, Python, Ready Remote, Viper, Xpresskit and XpressStart

The engine could be shut down when the vehicle is in motion for certain vehicles with these remote start systems installed.

However, not everyone who has one of these devices installed is affected by the recall notice.

The company said the recall does not affect vehicles with a traditional ignition system that use a key the operator has to insert into the ignition and turn.

All of the remote start systems affected by the recall are installed on vehicles that employ a push-to-start ignition system for vehicle model years between 2008 and 2015.

These vehicles do not require a traditional key and instead are started when the operator pushes a button, provided a wireless key-fob is near a receiver in the ignition.

However, not all of these vehicles are affected by the recall either.
