Winnipeg’s new garbage collection system means that for the first time, people may have to pay more to get their trash picked up. That’s causing concern for some, since there’s an estimated 40 per cent increase in household waste this time of year. Once a bin is filled, collectors will take up to three bags extra, but homeowners will be charged a $5 fee.

Since garbage didn’t get collected on Christmas, pickup will happen one day later for this week only. Excess recycling can be dropped off for free at one of seven recycling depots around the city.

The City’s annual Christmas tree recycling program is also underway. Christmas trees can be dropped off at nine locations around the city. The trees are turned into woodchips and used in city landscaping. The mulch is also available to the public starting in early January.
