Manitoba’s Independent Investigation Unit has decided not to lay criminal charges after an alleged assault by a Gimli RCMP officer during an arrest.

Last year on July 19, an officer was performing traffic duties north of Gimli when a vehicle drove past at a high speed.

The officer followed in a vehicle pursuit and called for back-up. Police said a 37-year-old male was arrested and taken into custody.

However, during the arrest the man involved in this altercation ended up with an injury to his left eye and diagnosed in hospital with a non-displaced fractured orbital bone. According to police, this was considered serious, so the IIU took over the investigation.

Police said following a review by Manitoba Prosecution Services and on consideration of all the evidence gathered, no charges were laid against the officers involved.

The man involved is facing numerous charges, and because of this the IIU said it will not comment further on this matter.
