Police said a 49-year-old suspect wanted on charges for sexual assaults in Manitoba has been arrested in Spain.

A Canada-wide warrant had previously been issued for the arrest of Iain Kenneth Smy, said police.

He was originally arrested in Ontario in 2009 by Brandon police.

Officers charged Smy with nine counts of sexual assault for offences in Brandon that occurred between 1984 and 1988.

The male victims ranged in age from 11 to 15, said police.

Smy was later released on bail and failed to appear in court in July 2010, leading to an arrest warrant being issued.

Investigators from the Manitoba Integrated Warrant Apprehension Unit later confirmed he had fled to Europe.

The unit began working with Interpol and other European police agencies to locate Smy.

On April 30, the Spanish National Police found Smy in a residence in Malaga, Spain and took him into custody.

An application has been filed for extradition to return Smy to Manitoba to face the sexual assault charges.
