A man is dead after a traffic stop in Thompson. According to the RCMP, a police chase ended in the police officer firing a gun after being struck by a vehicle.

Around 2 a.m. on Saturday, an RCMP officer tried to pull a vehicle over for erratic driving. After a short pursuit, the vehicle stopped and the officer started to approach when the vehicle sped up, hitting the officer.

The officer's fired the weapon. The man driving died from his injuries, and a woman in the passenger seat suffered serious injuries.

The RCMP officer suffered minor injuries, but was released from hospital.

A second female passenger also suffered minor injures, unrelated to the shooting, and was released from hospital. Two other passengers were uninjured.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba, which looks into all serious incidents involving police, has opened an investigation into the shooting, as per established protocol, RCMP said.

Since the incident involves a fatality, the IIU requested a civilian monitor from the Manitoba Police Commission.
