An early morning fire has destroyed the Saint-Georges Museum in the community of St. Georges about 120-kilometres northeast of Winnipeg.

The fire began around 3:30 Saturday morning.

Mike Boulet, the president of the museum’s board said the central part of the building is completely gutted.

He said the walls and roof also sustained damage and the fire got into the attic.

The museum is made up of three adjoining buildings and the centre one sustained the most damage with the other two being damaged mostly by smoke and water.

Boulet said museum staff are now focusing on recovering anything from the museum that can be saved and they are particularly concerned about the archives.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and no financial estimate was immediately available for the extent of the damage.
