Potential changes to Winnipeg's parking by-law are set to be considered at city hall, including extra time for drivers running late.

The changes include an extra half hour for drivers parked at street parking spaces to move their vehicles.

"We thought that well there is that situation where people do run late so let's give them that opportunity to try and extend that time if they can," said Colin Stewart a policy analyst with the Winnipeg parking authority

However the revisions say drivers can't just circle the block to reset the clock anymore.

Drivers wouldn't be allowed to park on the same block again after exceeding the time limit.

"In a lot of locations with large institutions, every spot on the street was being taken up by employees of those institutions and they are all collectively going around the block and coming back to the same spot to reset the clock," Stewart said.

City crews will have to post no parking signs for road work or street cleaning 24 hours in advance, instead of the previous 12.

There are also proposed changes for people who park on residential properties during events.

Tickets would be issued to drivers instead of property owners for exceeding the limit of vehicles on a lot.

"Once the new bylaw comes into effect we'll be able to issue an offence notice as well," Stewart said. "We'll just ticket the car and then the driver the vehicle, which is typically the property owner will the receive a fine and that usually corrects the behaviour."

The changes are set to be discussed at the Infrastructure and Public Works Committee meeting on Tuesday.
