The Canadian Paediatric Society is releasing updated recommendations for treating a common nuisance for school aged children -- head lice.

The pediatricians recommend topical insecticides such as pyrethrins and permethrin applied directly to the child's head as the first choice for treatment of lice.

It says non-insecticides such as NYDA and Resultz are effective against live lice, nymphs and nits but are more expensive.

If one method doesn’t work after two treatments, it is recommended that you try another one.

The CPS says home remedies such as mayonnaise, vinegar or margarine may make it hard for lice to breathe, but probably won't kill them.

The CPS says children with head lice should be treated and then attend school or child care as usual the next day.

The Society says lice don't spread disease and are not the result of poor hygiene.
