The death of a little girl from the Peguis First Nation is being investigated as a homicide.

RCMP said they were contacted by Percy E. Moore Hospital in Hodgson after a 21-month-old girl was transported to hospital via ambulance in medical distress around 3 p.m. on July 17, 2014.

The girl died from injuries later that day in hospital.

The provincial government confirmed July 24 that the young girl from Peguis First Nation had previous involvement with Child and Family Services.

Minister of Family Services Kerri Irvin-Ross said the government will share what information it can with the public as the investigation proceeds.

"There had been involvement with Child and Family Services. I'm not able to talk about the specifics of the involvement with this specific case. There is an RCMP investigation that's happening and we need to be respectful of that investigation and ensure that we're not interfering at all,” she said.

The minister couldn't confirm who the child was living with prior to her death.

Peguis RCMP said  they are investigating the death as homicide with the help of the RCMP major Crimes Services.

Peguis is located just under 200 kilometres north of Winnipeg.

There have been no arrests so far.
