Diners and staff at a Winnipeg restaurant were forced to leave their meals Sunday night after a fire broke out in the kitchen.

The fire broke out at Applebee’s Restaurant on Pembina Highway just after 8:30 p.m.

The restaurant had to be evacuated while fire crews worked to contain the blaze.

Fire officials said the fire spread to the roof and attic. Crews could be seen working on the roof of the restaurant in an attempt to gain access to the flames.

Firefighters managed to contain the blaze and extinguish it, but not before it caused extensive damage to the business.

Fire officials estimated the damage to the restaurant at $200,000, saying there was smoke and water damage throughout the building as a result of the fire.

No one was injured in the blaze, and fire officials are investigating what may have sparked it.
