A Transcona pet store that might have to close because of business lost during a prolonged period without water due to frozen pipes says provincial inspectors found no issues during an inspection prompted by a complaint of animal abuse.

Until the city was able to thaw the pipes on Sunday, Pet Peripherals had been without water for 32 days.

The store’s owner said some animals died during that time, including mice, newts and fish.

After media reports about the situation, someone reported the store to the province for animal abuse and negligence.

Provincial inspectors visited the business on Tuesday but the store’s manager said they did not find any problems.

"It's procedure that they have to go investigate,” said Monica Kunzelman, “Now that they have and there was nothing that could, everything seemed fine and that's all we needed to know."

In spite of the fact the water has been restored, staff at Pet Peripherals say the business may still have to close at the end of the month because of losses sustained when the pipes were frozen.
