Winnipeg Police say a bomb caused a truck fire over the weekend that sent four people to hospital with severe burns.

Police confirm an Improvised Explosive Device known as an IED was accidentally detonated inside the cab of the vehicle.

Two men aged 22 and 27, a 20-year-old woman and a 17-year-old male youth were injured.

The 27-year-old man and 20-year old woman were transported to hospital in critical condition.

Police officials say the IED was inside a bag on the hood of another vehicle in a parking lot. One of the victims moved the bag into the truck but they were not the intended targets.

They also say the individual who brought the bag to the parking lot likely did not know it contained the device.

Police say there is a sense of concern because a bomb went off in a residential neighbourhood but don't believe there is an ongoing threat. The service can't say if someone was targeted but don't believe this was intended to do random harm.

However, they say the IED was designed for "maximum intent."

The Major Crimes and Bomb Units are investigating.
