Winnipeg police are investigating the city’s 19th homicide of 2012 Sunday. Officers went to the 500 block of Furby Street around 5:30 a.m. and found a badly injured woman.

A woman who asked not to be named lives nearby and said she saw the incident happen. She said a man ran out of a home in the 500 block of Furby Street and stabbed a young woman who was riding a bike with her sister.

The neighbour said the victim was stabbed in the stomach and collapsed off her bike. Her sister began to scream, the witness said.

Another neighbour, a male nurse, rushed out to help the woman who was stabbed and began performing CPR while waiting for police to get there.

The neighbour said the young woman died within minutes of being stabbed.

Police confirmed the woman succumbed to her injuries Sunday morning.

Sunday afternoon officers investigating the woman's murder taped off the area and the identification unit was on scene.

Nora Mekis lives in the area and said she wishes the area still had a neighbourhood watch program.

“As long as they know that there’s people looking around and walking around, that settles things,” said Mekis.

Officers combed the area for evidence for the duration of the day and into the early evening.

Police have not released the age or identity of the woman.
