Winnipeg police have laid charges in the stabbing death of a 39-year-old man in the West End Friday evening.

Just after 6:30 p.m. officers and emergency services rushed to a pizza restaurant on Sargent Avenue and Sherbrook Street to find Adam Jackson Nattaway bleeding profusely from a stab wound to his upper body.

Police said the stabbing happened in the 600 block of Sherbrook, and it's believed Nattaway stumbled to the pizza restaurant shortly after being stabbed.

“There was a lot of blood there, a lot of blood,” said Sandeep Uppal, who owns the Pizza Shack restaurant.

Uppal said Nattaway was sitting on the ground bleeding for a short time before he laid down.

The restaurant’s security camera captured footage of the grisly scene – showing a man walking into the Uppal family restaurant just after 6:30 p.m. He sat down at one of the tables, bleeding from his neck.

Uppal’s aunt said she could see he had been stabbed in the neck, and she immediately called 911. Others in the restaurant tried to keep Nattaway alert.

“He was trying to say something but blood was coming from his mouth,” said Uppal.

Police and emergency services arrived moments later, and emergency crews began to perform CPR.

Nattaway was then rushed to hospital in critical condition where he later died, police said.

Police believe Nattaway was stabbed at a party in a building in the 600 block of Sherbrook before going for help at the nearby restaurant on Sargent Avenue and Sherbrook Street.

Police said a fight broke out and resulted in Nattaway’s injuries.

A number of people were arrested after the party, and 49-year-old Edmund Seymoure Wescoupe was charged with manslaughter.

Area resident Garry McKay said lives in the building where the stabbing took place.

McKay said the apartment Nattaway was stabbed in is known for parties. “They always party. Every weekend there’s people coming in and out of there,” said McKay. “Always fights and blood.”

The homicide unit continues to investigate.

Police said this is Winnipeg’s 27th homicide of the year.
