Winnipeg police issued a public advisory Thursday on behalf of the City of Winnipeg water and waste department.

Individuals have recently been posing as City of Winnipeg employees and have been approaching residents in the St. Vital area of Winnipeg, offering to install water filtration systems, said police.

The water and waste department said the City of Winnipeg does not provide that service.

Anyone who has been approached by individuals posing as city employees is asked to report the incident to police.

Officials said City of Winnipeg employees have proper identification and will produce it upon request.

Residents are urged to ask for identification before allowing anyone into their homes.
