Police identified the man killed on a West End street at the same time that they announced they have laid charges in the case.

Helder Serpa, 57, died from multiple stab wounds he suffered after he was confronted by an unknown man while walking to his residence.

A passer-by spotted Serpa lying on the street near Cumberland Avenue and Spence Street and called emergency services. Police found the suspect in the same area and took him into custody.

Police said the suspect is known to them, but they have never had any contact with Serpa, Winnipeg Police Service spokesperson Jason Michalyshen said.

Matthew James Sellner, 35, faces a charge of second-degree murder.
