An officer with the Dakota Ojibway Police Service has been cleared of any fault after a prisoner was injured following an arrest on April 2.

The incident occurred at the Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation when police went to a home to make an arrest.

The male suspect surrendered without incident and was taken first to the Sandy Bay detachment, then to the RCMP cells in Portage la Prairie.

The prisoner later alleged that he sustained injuries and was taken to hospital in Portage la Prairie on April 4.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba investigated the incident and concluded the affected person’s injuries resulted from both a pre-existing medical condition and self-inflicted actions.

The details of this investigation were first released on April 11.
