Winnipeg’s west district crime unit has launched a new initiative to help curb property crime in the River Heights area.

Project Comet is in response to the spike in crime during the summer months. These crimes tend to focus on home and vehicle break-ins.

According to police, 94 per cent of crime in the River Heights area is property-related crime.

Officers are increasing patrols in the affected areas and are going door-to-door handing out information to homeowners with what they need to protect themselves from the possibility of being victimized.

Safety tips include:

  • Close and lock all doors and windows when you are not home
  • Do not leave laptops or other valuables inside your vehicle
  • Do not leave valuables in your yard (bikes, lawnmowers)
  • Install light timers and alarm systems
  • Notify your neighbors if you are going to be away

Police are also encouraging people to report any suspicious circumstances they see by calling 204-986-6222.

This model is currently being used only in the west district. Police are hoping to have spoken or handed out information to every homeowner in the River Heights area by the end of Wednesday.
