The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Water Rescue Team pulled a man from the Red River near the Norwood Bridge at 11:55 a.m. Sunday.

Friends were supposed to meet the 70-year-old man at 10:30 a.m. to go fishing.

Upon arrival they noticed his fishing stuff on the dock but not him.

At about 11:13 a.m., they saw his hat floating in the water and that’s when they called 911.

"The people who called were supposed to meet the gentleman at this location,” said Frank Leswick, the platoon chief of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service. “So, we didn't know whether he had entered the water or not. We had to search the area."

After nearly 40 minutes rescue crews located the man’s walker in the water and shortly after that discovered him.

Emergency responders performed chest compressions on the man on the dock before rushing him to nearby St. Boniface Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

On Monday morning, police said the man's death is not considered criminal in nature and his name will not be released.
