Winnipeg police are looking into the possibility that three recent sex assaults in the Fort Rouge and River Heights areas may have been committed by the same suspect.

The most recent attack took place around 2:30 a.m. Friday near the quite residential intersection of Niagara Street and Kingsway.

Police say a 19-year-old woman had just been dropped off when a man approached and sexually assaulted her.

"She was able to provide a suspect description to our artist and we did release a composite of the suspect,” said Constable Eric Hofley of the Winnipeg Police Service. “We're hoping that someone might recognize him and let members of our sex crimes unit know."

The suspect is described as pale-skinned, 25-35 years of age, 5’4” tall with a thin to medium build and dark or strawberry blonde facial hair.

Police say the same suspect might be responsible for two other recent sex assaults.

"At this point it remains to be seen whether it is the same person for these three incidents,” said Hofley.

In the early hours of June 22, a 19-year-old woman was attacked while walking on Wellington Crescent.

The victim described the suspect as being in his mid-20’s, standing 5’5” to 5’7” tall, with a slim build.

On July 10 at 2:00 a.m. in the area of Roslyn Road and Nassau Street North, a 34-year-old woman was sexually assaulted.

She described the suspect as 20-30 years of age with light brown hair and said he fled on a bike.

In the most recent attack on Friday morning the victim also said the suspect fled on a bike.

Two of the attacks took place in Osborne Village, one of the city’s most vibrant neighbourhoods but one in which many women told CTV News they do not feel safe.

"I'm often afraid. I usually have a key in my hand,” said Carol-Ann Bohrn who works in the neighbourhood. “I have friends who have pepper-spray and I don't know where to get pepper-spray but it's something I wish I had."

Police encourage women leaving restaurants and bars late at night to walk in groups and stay in well-lit areas.

Brohn says it’s unfortunate that women are being asked to alter their behaviour for their safety but understand the need to be careful.

“That’s terrifying,” she said. “You want to be practical and you want to do those things because there’s a real threat.”

Police say anyone with information on the sex assaults or who thinks they may recognize the suspect should call investigators at (204) 986-6245 or Crime Stoppers at (204) 786-TIPS (8477).
