Winnipeg police are searching for a male suspect in connection with a small explosion that shut down traffic outside the Manitoba Law Courts Wednesday.

Police said they are searching for a man, aboriginal in appearance.

The suspect is around mid-20 and has some facial hair.

Police said he was wearing sunglasses and a hat.

According to officials, the suspect placed a backpack on the ground at York Avenue and Kennedy Street at around 2 p.m. Wednesday. Police said the suspect then lit the pack on fire, and fled the scene on a small bike.

A courthouse employee in his mid-50s tried to extinguish the fire before it exploded.

Police say no one was hurt, but the employee was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Officers told CTV, it doesn’t appear the suspect tried to enter the law courts.

“Our investigators are leaning to the conclusion that this is an isolated incident,” said Const. Rob Carver. “But I think it’s a little premature to confirm that with any level of real conviction.”

Manitoba Justice said it let all court staff know about the incident Wednesday.

In an email statement, a justice spokesperson said staff has been reminded to report “any unusual or suspicious objects to a supervisor immediately.”

Court matters proceeded as scheduled Thursday.

According to Manitoba Justice, “there are no changes to public access to the building today.”

Police said an investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Major Crimes Unit.
