RCMP in Portage la Prairie are investigating a suspicious death that took place early Thursday morning.

Police and EMS were called to a residence on 1st Street, near the BDO Centre, after reports of an unconscious male found outside.

Once they arrived on scene, RCMP said the 20-year-old male was dead.

On Friday, investigators also responded to the same street and Lorne Avenue, where an attempted break-and-enter took place.

Police said it is believed at this time that the two incidents are related. The RCMP's Forensic Identification Services are gathering evidence from both locations.

The Chief Medical Examiner's Office has requested an autopsy and will work with the forensics unit to determine the cause of death.

Family members have identified the man as Brett Sandney.

Sandney's mom Donna Sandney said she has no idea what happened. She said her family is still struggling to come to grips with her son's death.

"He's the light of our life," she explained.  "We loved him.  He was a good guy, he was a funny guy."

Resident Sharon Kohut told CTV News she woke up shortly after 8 a.m. to sirens outside her house.

When she got up to see what was going on, Kohut saw the man who was found dead slouched over on a neighbour's doorstep right across the street from her house.

"It's very shocking," she said.  "We have a great neighbourhood, it has nothing to do with our neighbourhood."

RCMP said there is currently no concern for public safety regarding these incidents.
