Premier Greg Selinger is expected announce the province's plans to welcome Syrian refugees to Manitoba today.

Earlier this month, Selinger pledged to welcome an additional 2,000 Syrian refugees to the province by the year's end.

The province has not stated where or how they plan to house the refugees.

New Journey Housing says the rental vacancy rate in Manitoba is low and affordable housing stocks are in short supply.

The federal government plans to take in 10,000 refugees by the year's end and another 15,000 by the end of February. The Liberals had originally planned to take 25,000 refugees by the end of the year.

The refugees will be processed overseas, undergo medical exams and security screening before boarding the planes to Canada. Most refugees will be landing in Toronto and Montreal.

The premier along with other officials will make the announcement at the Manitoba Legislature around noon today.
