While parents and guardians from La Verendrye School say they love their school, they say the time for their children to move to a bigger school is long overdue.

They want the Winnipeg School Division to swap their school with Earl Grey’s.

The parents and guardians from the French immersion program say overcrowding at the century-old building is hindering their children's education.

"If a child is struggling with basic reading skills, they have to be taken out to a hallway or into a stairwell. That's simply unacceptable," said parent Ratna Pandey.

While Sarah Jane Heke, also a parent from La Verendrye School, says moving their school to Earl Grey building makes sense - financially and logistically.

"They have adequate space and when you (have an) amount of space that's in excess of what you need, it doesn't stop you from utilizing it, but we're in a situation where we don't have that luxury. We don't have space. We don't have programming," said Heke.

But parents like, Kim Thorarinson, whose children go to Earl Grey school say, it's not fair to force their children and families from a school that meets their needs.

"But in succeeding in what you need by making another group lose what they need hardly seems like a smart answer to the problem," said Thorarinson.

She said the debate over swapping schools is dividing the community, where families from both schools live.

And that the idea is stressing out families at Earl Grey School.

The Winnipeg School Division said swapping schools is just one option the division is considering and that parents and guardians need to remember that no final decision will be made without their consultation.

But some parents and guardians are having their own type of consultation with each other on social media , which at times gets heated.

"Let the consultation process go through. Have their voice heard through that process. Stop arguing with their neighbour on Twitter because that isn't going to change anything and it's just going to hurt the community,” said Mark Wasyliw, chairperson of the Winnipeg School Division.

The WSD said no final decision will be made until later this year.
