The province outlined how it plans to make the Red River Valley more accessible for truck traffic.

About 40 attended an open house in Morris on Wednesday night.

Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation has been working on the plans for about a year.

It rolled out recommendations in three phases.

The first phase would upgrade portions of Highway 59 and 23 so trucks can travel more easily between Steinbach and Highway 75.

The second phase would improve a stretch of Provincial Road 246 for trucks to use. This would allow truck traffic to bypass Morris.

Finally the province suggested a upgrading a number of roads in the area at the request of community members.

Highway 75 sees about 1500 trucks per day.

"Highway 75 is our busiest freight corridor in the province. I consider it the backbone of Manitoba's economy. It connects Winnipeg with the Pembina-Emerson border crossing, which is the busiest border crossing west of Detroit and billions of dollars of trade take place there every year," said Erica Vido with Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation.

A final report will be complete at the end of the year.

The recommendations are available online starting on Thursday.
