The province is introducing a law targeting deadbeat parents and making sure a child's best interests are put first during custody battles.

The new bill would see new punishments for those not paying child support.

Names and photos would be placed online for those with outstanding arrest warrants. Hunting and fishing licenses would be suspended. The maximum fines for late or missed payments would increase from $500 to $5,000.

Under the law, children could apply for child support.

The new legislation will allow for grandparents and step-parents to apply for custody. It will also clarify how parents are recognized in cases of surrogacy and in LGBT families.

The province says the new law helps blended and gay and lesbian families.
