A group of people called police after finding what appeared to be human remains off a trail in the Leaf Rapids area on Aug. 30.
Leaf Rapids is more than 900 km northwest of Winnipeg.
RCMP responded and confirmed the remains were human.
Police have not yet confirmed the identity of the body, however.
“While we are not in a position to confirm the identity of the remains at this time, our officers have already been in contact with those believed to be the family of the deceased." said Sgt. Bert Paquet. "We are dedicated to bring certainty and closure to the affected family."
Foul play is not currently suspected, but the investigation is continuing.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and RCMP forensic specialists are assisting with the case.
