RCMP are treating the death of a man found on Long Plain First Nation as a homicide.
The body was found near a burning vehicle on Jan. 2.
"There was someone laying there and they tried CPR on the individual," said Long Plain Chief David Meeches.
Police did not release Thursday the name or age of the victim killed.
Long Plain First Nation is located southwest of Portage la Prairie.
Theoren Moe Meeches saw an RCMP tactical team go into a home and take three people into custody.
He thinks the three may also be involved in an attack on his cousin, who lives there.
“Three guys beat him up, jumped him, I guess, said Theoren Meeches.
Community members worry the homicide may be a retaliation for the beating against the man, who is still recovering in hospital.
Chief David Meeches wouldn't comment on a possible injured man. He confirmed the three taken into custody are all members of the Long Plain First Nation.
“I'm aware there's loss of life, however, the deceased is not from Long Plain First Nation,” said Chief Meeches.
RCMP confirmed three men - age 20, 21 and 47 - are in police custody.
Community member reported hearing shots fired on Wednesday night. RCMP and First Nation leaders said they haven't been able to confirm that.
Charges had not yet been announced on Thursday.
Police also have not yet released the cause of death.
