The Canadian Red Cross is sending additional supplies to Shamattawa First Nation after an aggressive fire destroyed the community’s only store and band office.

The organization said it responded to a request from the community for additional food and baby supplies including diapers, formula, basic canned goods and supplies for making bannock.

The supplies were sent out of Winnipeg Monday.

The Red Cross is working on behalf of the federal government to fulfill the community’s immediate needs until it can re-establish the community’s store.

The organization is also coordinating efforts with The North West Company, which owns the store that burnt down.

The fire started in the band office mid-afternoon on Sept. 22, before it spread to the grocery store next door, police said.

RCMP arrested a 12-year-old boy, and said five other children under 12 were involved in setting the blaze.

The Red Cross said there isn’t a need for direct donations, but anyone wishing to help can make a financial donation at the organization’s website, or by calling 1-800-418-1111.
