Regina police arrested a second suspect in a homicide and arson investigation in Winnipeg. The charges stem from a fire at an apartment building in downtown Winnipeg on July 26.

Fire fighters were originally called to the Holiday Tower in the 100 block of Hargrave Street because of a fire in one of the units. Fire fighters extinguished the fire, after which they found a man with upper body injuries and sent him to hospital in critical condition.

Arthur Haussermann, 53, later died as a result of his injuries.

The fire was contained to the unit and caused around $10,000 damage.

A 27-year-old woman now faces charges of second-degree murder and arson. Police had already arrested and charged a 29-year-old woman with second-degree murder and arson.

Const. Jason Michalyshen said police don’t know what the connection between the two women might be. “Obviously they were known to each other to some extent, whether they were acquaintances, friends, or maybe they even met earlier that particular day,” he said.

Police arrested 29-year-old Clarissa Dawn Ponace near Maryland Street and Broadway Avenue on July 29 and charged her in connection with the incident. Raven Desjarlais, 27, was arrested in Regina on July 29 and returned to Winnipeg by members of the Winnipeg Police Service.

On Saturday, Ashley Thomas moved into his new home at the Holiday Towers. What should be a happy day was instead met with some apprehension.

"It is a little bit unnerving, though, moving into a place and having a murder happen a week before you move in, I'll tell you that much," he said.

Police continue to investigate another homicide that took place in the same tower in early june -- but have not linked the two crimes.

"These incidents unfortunately can occur anywhere,” said Const. Jason Michalyshen.“No area of the city, no location within the city, is necessarily immune to it. Unfortunate circumstances can occur and do occur anywhere."

Thomas says finding out about the two recent violent crimes happening in his new building causes concern.

"Especially like a fire. There's smoke. Other people that are not involved could end up being harmed by it. So, it is a little unnerving a bit, you know?"
